Flexible seating gives my students freedom to choose their seat based on their level of comfort, not only with the seat, but within the classroom itself. During whole group instruction and independent work times, the students will make the choice of where they want to sit to help with their learning and learning style. My current situation involves students sitting at desks that are not comfortable for most of them. This causes students to stand up more often during class time to stretch or asking to sit on the floor during work times. When the students are comfortable with their surroundings, higher engagement is achieved for all in the classroom.
My students are noticeably more engaged in their work and cause less distractions in the classroom when they are given a choice of where they can sit!
The choices that I have made are right for my classroom in many ways because of the different types of learning styles in each class and it will give those that need a chance to move that opportunity. The exercise balls and chairs have been chosen to give students a way to move around without disturbing the classroom environment. Students will be able to get the wiggles out while learning. The stools will allow the students a chance sit on something that is not a regular student desk and they are able to be moved around the classroom when working in small groups. The bean bag chairs will be used to allow students a comfortable place to sit and learn in a positive learning environment.
I have seen how allowing students a little bit of freedom and giving them a choice has made a positive change in my classroom. I hope that these additional options will help my students grow even more!
