My students in my advanced classes and Advanced Placement class are competing often for scores and college placement with students from the suburbs, private schools, and other high income districts. In AP Calculus, having access and understanding to the correct graphing calculator is a requirement in order to score well on the test as roughly a half of the test requires graphing calculator functions and expertise of the technology. The TI 84+ Calculators require repetitive training best performed over a series of years, starting with Algebra 1 functions and culminating in Calculus.
By building a classroom set of these TI84+ graphing calculators, students will have access to the best tools necessary in order to let them compete with schools in other districts on college entrance examinations and to better appreciate the beauty of mathematics.
For example, when learning about how the cross section of a cone versus a pyramid differ, the graphing calculator allows students to see the graph of these different conic sections. In lessons where we need to generate values for complicated functions, the ability to store functions in the TI84+ calculator and enter different input values and quickly generate a table of output values. These graphing calculators will help to engage and expediate the learning that we are already doing in my classroom!
