By implementing mindfulness in our classrooms students will have access to the time, space, and materials they may need when certain feelings present themselves. It鈥檚 called the 鈥減eace corner鈥 because there is something peaceful about simply being allowed to experience our feelings and take care of ourselves in the way that is right for us.
It鈥檚 private, it鈥檚 structured, it includes choice, it鈥檚 inviting; it鈥檚 a movement toward independence in school and ultimately into everyday life.
The materials I am requesting will encourage simple grounding techniques. I will teach these techniques to students and staff in lessons for an understanding of how to integrate the practice into the classroom.
The comfy floor seat allows students to relax in a safe place where they can begin to center themselves. The Hoberman breathing balls will help students focus on their breathing while using the 5-4-3-2-1 grounding technique. Using all 5 senses (see, feel, hear, smell, taste) to notice what is going on around them and provide distraction. The paper trays will allow classrooms to keep all the materials together for organization and to travel throughout the room in designated areas. Lastly, the clip boards and pencil cases will provide students the ability to use coloring sheets with calming designs such as mandalas. Mandala coloring sheets are especially calming for children when having a difficult time verbalizing their emotions.
