I have had the pleasure of being this groups 2nd grade teacher, so as I move with them to 3rd grade, I know what they would benefit from as learners. As I sat and reflected on my year with them, I realized that they did their best work when they were given the choice to move out of their assigned seating and access the classroom where they felt most comfortable.
I do not currently have any flexible seating options in my classroom, but as the year went on I improvised and their best learning moments were when they go to get up and find a place where they felt they learned best. This looked like students using personal white boards on their laps seated on the floor or at work tables.
I know that adding some colorful and comfortable seating options will boost their engagement and learning in 3rd grade. I love being able to give them choices and flexible seating is a great way for me to give them chances to make choices each day. I want my students to have the ability to learn in an inviting and comfortable environment, and the items on my list will help me provide that ideal environment for them.
