Finding a book series that engages the whole class is a rare thing. For three years I have read aloud stories from the riveting series of historical fiction, I Survived. My students absolutely love these books because they are told from a child's perspective. Each chapter ends with a cliffhanger and the kids feel like they are back in history right alongside the main characters.
I Survived books serve the dual purpose of exciting students' passion for reading and introducing them to important historical events. Reading these stories leads to great questions and rich discussions. Because I will have older students this year, I Survived books will not have to be relegated to read-alouds. These books will be perfect for guided reading groups with my higher second grade readers and my third grade students.
