My goal for my students this year was for them to develop a more regular relationship with reading. A love of reading! One student said on his first day in my class: "I hate reading. I don't read." That same student would quietly exclaim "Yes!" under his breath when independent reading time was announced. However, my students' lives, stories, and backgrounds are not represented in the anchor texts that we read as a class. The purpose of adding The Circuit to our curriculum is to provide students with a text that is more reflective of their own culture and heritage.
