Through math stations, my students can problem solve and develop a true understanding of fractions and division which are fully introduced in 4th grade and are the building blocks for higher-level math concepts. Students at this level must truly grasp the fractional parts of a whole and visual materials are essential for most students conceptual development. We often show pictures, but having this fractional activity for groups to manipulate fractional pieces to see how to match equivalents will guide their understanding of why we need common denominators. Long division is also a stumbling block for many 4th grade students. The division activity center will help students develop the area model concept of division.
