Many of the textbooks or novels we are asked to use in class only give a voice to one perspective. After the end of year feedback, students begged for "books with characters that look like me" and I am doing my best to fulfill their wishes.
Participating in literature circles, where they have several high-interest books to choose from, increases their life experience, and lets them have those highly-analytical conversations with their peers.
