All students need a classroom that allows them to learn and grow in to become life-long learners and reach their full potential. We are in need of some essential classroom items to ensure students are able to walk into a classroom on the first day of school that fosters learning and builds community. Currently, our classroom has a carpet that is too small for all the students to sit on together. We also need classroom book boxes and a mailbox. These are all essential materials in a classroom that aids in a students' learning and creates a more community-minded classroom. Our classroom carpet is used for morning meetings, instruction, read alouds, and independent learning. Students use the carpet for calm down time and as their safe place to independently read.
Our classroom carpet creates safety and community within our room. In addition to the carpet, students deserve to have their own space to keep their materials, a space they get to call theirs. Students have desks; however, book boxes allow them to have a space of their own in another part of our classroom. Students use book boxes during independent work time. This allows us to utilize choice seating and gives the students opportunities to find a “smart spot” in the classroom to complete their work.
Every child should feel a sense of belonging when they walk into a classroom, especially the first day of school. Seeing their name on their mailbox, book box, and desk sets this important tone. They deserve an opportunity to build a classroom community on a carpet and have it be a place to read, learn, and interact with friends. These products will help to make our classroom a classroom environment every child will thrive in and learn in.
