The use of sketchbooks is used daily in our classroom for various assignments. We work with drawing challenges such as Inktober which is every year in October. Students are challenged to draw in only inks and they are able to follow their own them for the whole month. My beginning art students learn about the elements of art and principles of design which they practice visually in their sketchbooks that become creative journals. My advanced students use their sketchbooks to document their creative processes before beginning a large project for the class.
The sketchbooks allow me to see all my students work organized in one place and my students aren’t just putting together a stack of wrinkled lined paper. Most students are able to purchase a sketchbook for class but there are a few that can not due to family priorities. By having these sketchbooks in hand, I will be able to help out those students in need who are unable to purchase one.
