Most of my students come from low-income, low-opportunity homes. Many have parents who work 2+ jobs just to keep food on the table, while leaving their student to watch younger siblings. Quite a few are 1st or 2nd generation immigrants to the United States. ALL receive FREE lunch.
While life might not have smiled on them, they continue to smile. They are bright, charismatic, fun-loving young adults who don't let their woes stand in their way. They rise above their challenges, pushing beyond their circumstances to clear a new path to a better life for themselves and their families.
Daily I am inspired by their hard work and perseverance. They genuinely love and care for others, and truly understand the meaning of family. And somewhere, despite all the challenges they face, they find time to be passionate about learning. They are awe-inspiring, and I am truly blessed to get to work with them.
