I teach students literary standards using a variety of novels. The novel that gets the most interest is "The Lightning Thief". I have used the paperback novel for six years. Now, the binding is falling apart with pages coming out.
One student entered my class as a second grade reader. By the time the school year ended, he was reading at a sixth grade level. His love of reading began with "The Lightning Thief". It was the first novel he had read from cover to cover. Once we, as a class, completed that novel, he read the whole series on his own. His reading did not stop there. Over the next two years, I would often see him with his nose buried in a book.
"The Lightning Thief" is a high interest book in which students enjoy reading about the heroic exploits of Percy Jackson. After reading this novel, many students go on to complete the whole series. After that, they look for other series by Rick Riordan.
