My low-income students enjoy creating original artwork. Most of my children have a typical box of crayons and/or markers at home. What they don't have are the dot markers, stamps and stamp pads, colorful tape, playdough and playdough tools. Art materials most of them have never used!
By providing a variety of art supplies to my students, they become more engaged in learning, their vocabulary flourishes as they describe what they are making and the tools they are using, and their dexterity and muscle development in their hands improves which increases their success in handwriting.
As each art medium is introduced, students learn how to care for the materials, practice using the different mediums, and learn how to clean up and store the materials and art tools so they are ready to be used the next time. But more importantly, they can let their imaginations soar as they create their own masterpiece!
