These sensory tools are going to give 18 at-risk students a chance they deserve to regulate their emotions while in the classroom. "Normal" five year olds can identify their emotions, and have some understanding as to why they are feeling the way they are feeling. However, those children who come from homes that did not allow for them to grow socially and emotionally, struggle with identifying and understanding their emotions and actions. Many of my students come to school with high anxiety, stressed beyond belief, and frustrated.
Being five years old is "hard enough", but being a five year old coming from heartbreaking situations, can leave a child with multiple pieces missing that they need to self regulate their own emotions and behavior.
Having readily accessible sensory tools will empower my students to identify and understand how and why they are feeling the way they are feeling. These tools with provide them with different techniques they can use in the classroom to help them self regulate and return to join the rest of the class. Many of these tools are items that can go unnoticed, which will give my students the sense of security knowing they are not any different than the child next to them.
