It is important I spark or foster my students' interest in reading with a text that is engaging. Teaching in a culturally responsive classroom means engaging my students in text that forms an understanding about values, beliefs, and behaviors of people from cultures that are represented in my classroom. Our classroom does not have a class-set of literature that is relevant to my students or relevant to what is happening in the world we live in. The novel, "Ghost Boys" by Jewell Parker, would help my eighth graders identify with the main character and/or empathize with someone of a different race. It is important I spark or continue to foster my students interest in reading by engaging them in "Ghost Boys" as our anchor text as we make connections between history and current events together.
