When doing math, especially when you are first learning the skills of adding and subtracting it is great to have materials or manipulatives to help you visually see things being added and taken away. Abacuses are a great way to show adding/subtracting within 100. The abacus has 10 rows or ten beans on each row, 5 being one color and the other 5 being a different color. This will help student visual see counting by 5's and 10's. A great skill to have! This can be something student keep in their desks to use while working on math problems. Simple and easy to use! Plus it is portable!
