Flexible seating is research based classroom design that has a positive impact on motivating and engaging students! We want our students DOING so we need to design our spaces to encourage and motivate our kiddos to DO IT! Being able to lay down or sit or stand and do our work is engaging, comfortable and very motivating! These mats lay the foundation for the routines, procedures, and expectations that flexible seating requires to be successful throughout the entire year. On day 1 as students arrive I will already have the carpets and clipboard and crayon boxes laid out around the classroom. As I greet students, I will tell them they can pick any carpet and lay down or sit down and color. This eases them into the idea of carpets and working on the floor. We will practice and model until the routine is familiar, and then gradually add other options such as scoop rockers and wiggle seats until all flexible seating options are learned.
