I have witnessed a massive change in the excitement surrounding learning over the past two years. During year one, I had a standard classroom arrangement with rows and columns of desks. My students were engaged and participating, but when comparing the two years, there is a significant difference. This difference was mainly due to a classroom arrangement.
Studies have consistently shown that classroom design and arrangement matters towards learning. It impacts engagement, participation, and involvement in learning, as well as the ability to retain information. During year two, students would walk in the room and their eyes always lit up. They were excited because every day they had a chance to sit somewhere new, rather than just a desk. Unfortunately, due to cost, I was not able to have seating for everyone. So, there were students that had to sit at their desks some days. Teachers would always come to me and say their students kept saying they wanted to be in my class because of the seating.
Flexible seating brings benefits to all students, especially Exceptional Children and English Language Learners. These students typically enter the classroom stressed and overwhelmed. Flexible classroom seating allows these children, along with others, participate more consistently and contribute to their own learning.
