My new classroom was filled with many past teachers old, mildewed left behind stuff. I cleaned & removed all items that would be unhealthy for my students which left the space virtually empty of basic teaching tools. The games I chose are used for imaginative play, team building etc. The craft materials are used for design thinking and "maker space" projects. My students love coming to school because they enjoy the creative ways that I incorporate these items into their daily lessons.
We begin every year by writing on a whiteboard who they dream to be when they grow up, often learning there are many future doctors, veterinarians and marine biologists in the room! I print their photos and they get displayed in the classroom. Conversations about their dreams are generated all year long. The whiteboards are most often used for interactive formative assessment and other classroom learning activities.
