These materials will make a difference in my students' learning in reading and writing as the seating options will make our classroom feel like home, increase students' comfort, and therefore increase their engagement and success. Students find it hard to sit still all day in stiff chairs; however, with a comfortable futon, cushions for floor seating, wobble cushions to add to any seat, and kick bands, students can move as often as they'd like and learn in a seat that is most suitable to them. When students have the opportunity for choice in their learning and environment, their success and creativity is infinite. In the business world, employees are given luxury desk chairs and some are given the option to have desks to stand at, increasing productivity and comfort. Students enjoy the same opportunities, choosing how and where they work best as they read and write creatively. Where do you work best: at your couch, from the floor, fidgeting, or even from a standard desk with a comfy chair? Beyond comfort, movement, and engagement, flexible seating has many benefits if you are not familiar. Flexible seating creates a community within the classroom as students have to share and collaborate within the space, rather than becoming territorial. Having many options in the classroom, students must learn to share and communicate in order to utilize the space successfully; students know flexible seating is a privilege that must be used respectfully, further teaching respect and communication among students. Additionally, students are grouped together based upon their seating choice, giving opportunity to collaborate, improve social skills, and build knowledge off of one another.
