For years in the classroom, I have struggled to get my students truly excited about reading. Reading the weekly story in the text book was not meeting my students' needs and getting them engaged in the FUN of reading. Last school year, I decided to check out 20 copies of Number the Stars by Lois Lowry from the public library and borrow 10 copies from other teachers. We read and analyzed the novel as a class with huge success. Students were so engaged every day in class and could not wait to read on.
After finishing the novel, one student announced, "That was the best book I've ever read!!" He continued, "I never read books like this. I usually read graphic novels. This was so good..." That is what I hoped my students would experience while reading good novels, to fall in love with the characters and be moved by the story. I hope to acquire a few class sets of novels to show my students that reading novels can really be a fun experience!
