These materials will help my 2nd graders during STEM tasks think inventively, imaginatively, and creatively. For example, students will need to construct a bridge using play dough and tooth picks. They will need to discover a design that can hold the weight of a toy car. Students will apply their structures to real world designs by constructing two and three dimensional shapes, lines, and angles using basic geometry. Students will be given task cards and will have to problem solve using the provided materials and time restraints. Students will then reflect on the challenges they faced and discuss what changes could have been made. Students are learning that both success and failure are part of life. I hope these experiences inspire my students to consider an engineering career.
