In my classroom, students are from all grades 3rd through 6th, at the same time. I try to make my students feel special and understand that each of them has individual needs. I aim to provide them with the diverse resources they require to have an equal educational opportunity. For some of my students, in order to be successful, all it takes is a comfortable seat. The perfect seat can reduce distractions and allow the student to purely focus on instruction and work on a multi-step task, which can not be done when the student is struggling with simply being comfortable in their chair. Each year I have tried to slowly add to my diverse seating arrangement in my classroom.
Flexible seating provides students the environment they need to be their best. My classroom is the place where my students feel safe and comfortable being who they are and don't have to worry about others thinking they are oddly different. Students do their best when they are comfortable. The more choices I give my students, the more they will feel invested and responsible for their learning. When I give my students choices I see greater engagement, more excitement, and a higher desire to learn. Their effort increases and there is a certain amount of pride that comes out in their work.
