Our kids at BMS in Las Vegas, NV are a very diverse group. To help them develop a true love of reading, they need books that are as diverse as they are. They need to be able to read their stories, told by someone who looks like them, about kids living a life like their own. They then need a safe place to share their thoughts and feelings about these books with other students. By having these amazing, diverse, titles to begin conversations, these students will be able to develop close relationships, gain understanding and appreciation for their fellow students, and foster those friendships they so desperately crave. Throughout the year I will take 60 students on a reading adventure! In a Project lit Book Club we will read through all the titles and have weekly club time where we will discuss these books. My hope is to bring in an at risk group of students, with failing reading grades and show them, maybe for the first time, books that speak to them.
