This project is meant to create a classroom that is welcoming and engaging for English Language Learners. My classroom will include students who were born here but speak another language at home, as well as students immigrating to the United States for the first time.
The books I have chosen were picked specifically for their cultural relevance, as a way to engage English Language Learners with stories that they can connect their lives to. Several of the books are bilingual and have multiple fairy tales included. These will be great for novice learners so they can see how English is written compared to their home language. They will be able to make connections and see similarities and differences in format and syntax with their first language. This will help them immensely to acquire English through fun literacy techniques.
I have also included google cardboard VR headsets so that we can present our home countries to each other in an interactive and immersive way. We can all learn from each other and experience each other's backgrounds virtually.
