In our classroom, students have only had exposure to recorder and keyboards as performance instruments. The students enjoy them, but our diverse student body needs diverse opportunities to explore music in a way they prefer or understand.
When students have a choice, there is a better chance that they will discover a way to learn that makes sense and is valuable to them. Providing students with alternatives to which they can apply basic music fundamentals will ensure that I reach a larger number of students.
For example, for a visual learner, the keyboard may be a better way to learn. Students who learn best aurally may choose recorder. Students who are tactile learners may enjoy learning to read music via ukulele.
