As standards become more and more specific, we as teachers tend toward using materials that condense learning into a neat little package. Classrooms that used to include novel studies, exploratory projects, and loads of student discussion have, in some cases, been replaced with scripted curricula and short passages that give students very little reason to get excited about their reading. This project is meant to help students in high-need demographics to find joy in reading. Through read-aloud novels of varying length, genre, background, and content, students will be given an opportunity to not only hear fluent reading, but also to be exposed to the wonders of reading in everyday life. The goal of this project is to acquire high-interest texts to be used in everyday teaching. Texts will be used as a read-aloud, after which students will have a copy of the text for use during close reading sessions during their small group activity time. In this way, standards are covered while allowing children to develop a lifelong love of reading.
