The purchase of these materials will support the hands-on, engaging labs that spark scientific thinkers for life. Basic lab supplies like pipettes, measurement tools and scientific models allow students to conduct standardized laboratory experiments. The majority of our students speak at least one language in addition to English, so as we build their capacity as bi- or trilingual scientists technology such as text-to-speech, virtual labs, and differentiated tools can be enhanced by a classroom set of headphones. Materials such as envelopes and laminating sheets help me to organize stations to provide as much student-directed learning and leadership in our classroom without putting me into bankruptcy.
Science education is best when it asks students to use their scientific skills in contexts outside of a textbook.
The value of experimentation, collaboration, and problem-solving skills that come from labs cannot be understated. My students face a number of unique challenges in an education system not designed for them. By supporting our classroom with supplies, technology and love we can make sure they are developing the skills they need to lead us to a better (& more science-y) future!
