Fifth grade is such a crucial time to a student to their development. Not only are they challenged academically, they face challenges of changing surroundings and relationships. This age is where one is learning how to treat others and how they feel about themselves.
Literature is a powerful way to connect with yourself, others, and the world. It is through these connections students begin to form their own ideas and opinions of their community and how they play a role. This book powerfully teaches how we should treat others, how to overcome differences, and how to open your heart and mind. I believe reading this as a class at the beginning of the year will not only set the tone for the classroom, but for the rest of these students’ young adult years.
