I plan to begin the school year by reading the books that I have asked for to my students. Some of the books will help build my students' familiarity with important vocabulary, such as perseverance, ingenuity, and life skills. I chose other books because they include unbiased examples of children being creative and finding solutions. While all of the stories are fiction, they each have characters experimenting, taking risks, being creative, and learning from mistakes. I have found that connecting literacy to new and unfamiliar activities, builds excitement and curiosity. This leads to students who are eager to dive in and try new things. By funding our project, you will not only give my students the chance to learn important lessons, you will help them gain lifelong skills which will impact their future successes. The other materials I have asked for will be used at first for exploration. Having free time to play and experiment with items such as LEGOs, gears, blocks, and magnetic tiles, will help students be more comfortable and confident with the materials. Once my students are ready, I will begin giving them specific tasks or problems to solve using the materials. These challenges will build ingenuity, creativity, resiliance, and a host of other invaluable skills. Some examples are: *Build a structure at least 15 inches tall using toothpicks and foam balls. *Create a shape that includes one square and four triangles using straws. *Collaborate to build a 6 inch bridge between two desks. Finally, I plan to put together kits full of these materials, that students can take home and work with. Hopefully, this will encourage them to put down their screens, and prepare for their futures by playing with old fashioned toys.
