These books will enhance our classroom and make it more print-rich. I work with predominantly Black and Latinx students at or below the poverty-line in New Orleans, LA.
Unfortunately, our classroom is missing books that our students can love and enjoy. The books in our classroom are from the 80's and 90's, missing pages, torn faded, or do not feature characters that my students can identify with. Specifically, our classroom is missing diverse books that feature characters and voices from Indigenous, Latinx, Asian, and Black communities.
As I strive to create a love of reading in my classroom, I want students to be able to check books out from our classroom library based on their interests. I hope that with this project, students will be develop a love of reading by having the freedom and ability to choose books that represent them and their culture. To do this, I need to purchase more books that my students can identify with.
Books funded through this project will be purchased through Scholastic and AKJ Education.
