The media talks about it all the time, how disengaged millineals are in school, especially in the traditional English Literature classroom.
However, in my 7th year of teaching, I've found that students are just as much engaged now as they were when I was in school. The only difference is, they're more vocal about their needs, more willing to accept ownership and be apart of their education. One way I've given my students agency in their learning is through book studies in which students choose their novel and we focus on skills whole group. I also incorporate project based learning. Now, after extensive research on the phsycial and psychological benefits of flexible seating, I would like to incorporate this into my classroom as well.
I have already secured 2 arm chairs and two tables via donations and digging into my pocket, but to truly make our vision come Alice we need the community's help. Beyond the Gimmicks and fads in education, flexible seating is tried and true, even in high school.... especially in high school. Let's liberate the literature classroom in a literal sense and let the texts continue to do so internally.
