In our STEM lab, we are working to align concepts related to Science Technology Engineering and Math to the promotion of a sustainable future. At the same time, as an instructor, I am working to spark interest and curiosity. I believe that incorporating a functioning aquaponic system into our classroom will prompt inquiry by providing a visualization of the interconnections between course content, our basic needs and our shared lived experiences.
Student engagement starts with interest. It is my hope that our students observe this system operating in the background of our class and ask about it. From there, it's their questions which will drive the learning. Every student in my classroom is a scientist, I am simply supporting them on their path towards discovery, and in the end...greatness.
