鈥淢aria鈥 is a high school sophomore currently enrolled in SEI 3. Maria frequently checks out books in the library during her free time and when her SEI class visits the library. Maria used to only check out books in Spanish but has now moved on to short stories and graphic novels in English. Maria鈥檚 SEI teacher has stated that Maria has made a lot of progress with her English speaking skills and reading books in the English language. Maria hopes to transition to regular English classes at the beginning of her junior year.
Stories like Maria鈥檚 are very common at CHS. The student population has been using the library more than years past, not just for pleasure reading but for academic research and inquiry as well. CHS's librarian spends a significant amount of time outside of the library in the classroom teaching students research skills and methodologies. To back up their newly acquired skills CHS's library should have a robust collection of materials to encourage students to dig deeply into their course of study. When reading comprehension is improved and the love of reading is encouraged, students are able to be more successful not only in the classroom but after their secondary education experience as well. Thank you for considering this project!
