The ability to read is a privilege and a gift, but it is often not seen this way by students. As an educator who has a great passion for her craft, it is imperative that the materials I use as the vehicles of instruction engage students at a high degree. The novel "Booked" by Kwame Alexander fits this aspiration in every way. It is a gem that will lead students on their journeys to literacy mastery.
Not only is it essential to select inspiring literature, but it is also vital to have a comfortable space in which students can explore it. Rarely do kids ever get the opportunity to move beyond their desks or tables inside of a classroom environment. By providing comfortable seating and creating a calm ambiance (with a canopy, bulb lights, and colorful decor), I will be providing a space where everyone will feel welcome, safe, and inspired. In short, I hope to turn an unused part of my classroom into a sanctuary where students will discover their passion for reading; a space where they can live a thousand lives and visit countless places, both in this world and beyond.
