A carpet on a classroom floor is used for many functional purposes and is not just for looks. A carpet gives the students a place to come together as a whole class for learning and discussion. Students learn to take turns speaking and listening - learning to take others' ideas into consideration.
No one wants to sit in the same place all day. It's a hard thing to ask of such young children - to sit a desk, back straight, feet on the floor. A carpet gives them a safe, comfortable spot to spread out and explore with manipulatives.
And sometimes they just need a place to play. The wonderful thing about first grade is that there is still time for learning through play.
