You may be shocked at the number of children's literature on my ÐÇ¿Õ´«Ã½.org list, honestly, I am too. While being a Reading Specialist for the past five years, I've donated my own person classroom library to other teachers in need. Sharing books together will give my class a common topic to talk about. For example, after reading "Dog Breath" by Dav Pilkey at the beginning of the year, I can bring up Hally Tosis at any point of the school year and my students will immediately remember him. I can bring him up when I want to talk about character traits, or character motivation. I will purposely choose each book that I share with my students so that I can refer to it later in the year. In addition to sharing books, I use the "think-aloud strategy with my students. Most of the books I share are books that I read before. But, sometimes I will read a book that is new to me and the students. During those times, I find myself doing the best "think alouds." Because I am encountering the text for the first time, my natural thoughts a reader pop into my mind and I share those thoughts with my students and they will share their thought with me. Simply put, reading is fun! I want to show my students that we don't have to complete a reading log or take a quiz after enjoying a book. Now, I am returning back to my 1st love, which is connecting with and teaching a 3rd grade class. Replenishing my classroom library to share the love of reading with my students is my number one goal.
