I am requesting help starting a classroom library for the 6th and 7th-grade students in my English Language Arts class. My students have learning disabilities and require instruction in a special education classroom for ELA. To increase their reading skills and (hopefully) their love of reading, I am requesting funding for high-interest young adult books.
I will choose one book every Friday to read aloud the first chapter. My goal in this is to hook a student into wanting to read the rest of the book, which will promote book choice. Research has shown that the best way to increase fluency in reading is to hear good readers read aloud. In addition, the more options a student has available, the more likely they will be to find a book that grabs their heart.
