Specdrums are app-enabled rings that turn colors into music with a simple tap. The specdrum rings are a STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics) activity that allow students to create their own musical compositions with the ease of a tap on clothing, drawings, or any colored object.
These materials will make a difference by increasing student engagement through 21st century skills and cooperative learning. Students will use the SPECdrums to create and record unique sounds that will be integrated through their multi-content project.
In my classroom, students will listen to and analyze the classical composition “The Planets” by Gustav Holst. Students will connect musical motifs to the characteristics of the accompanying planet. They will then apply the knowledge they learned to create their own musical themes.
Students will break into groups and create their own planet with accompanying music improvised and composed with the Specdrum.
