The materials I am requesting are what every language arts teacher needs to help their students become lifelong readers - books! My school is embracing a new curriculum called Reader's Workshop this year, a program that relies heavily on student choice and independent reading. I believe wholeheartedly in the potential of Reader's Workshop to help my students discover the joy of a good book and to push them to read more in a school year than ever before. However, having a vast classroom library full of high-interest novels is essential to implement this curriculum properly, and my classroom library is currently quite small.
With these books, my students will be able to have a choice in what they read; they will be able to explore different genres, figure out who they are as readers, and get the practice they need to improve their comprehension. The best way for students to improve their reading ability is to regularly engage with texts that interest them. I want my students to have access to a classroom library that they deserve - one full of different genres, diverse characters, and relevant stories. The books I have requested in their project will go a long way towards improving my selection of novels and increasing my chances of helping kids connect with a book that they love.
