With a classroom subscription of Scholastic magazines like Scope and Junior Scholastic, my students will finally have access to real-world, relatable, non-fiction reading. In small groups, they will be able to read informational and argumentative articles about topics current in today's news that connect with the literary texts we are studying in class.
Reading about current events on topics they find interesting will help my students understand that "reading" does not have to be synonymous with "boring." These magazines will help my students make connections between the fictional stories and books to which they were previously unable to relate by providing real-world context for the conflicts and themes each text explores.
These non-fiction magazines will also help my students develop important skills for reading non-fiction texts, which will be important as they continue into trades like welding, construction, and engineering.
