I have the best job in the world! I get to run two different classes - mathematics and robotics - serving 6th and 7th graders in Springdale, Arkansas. My classes are all about creative problem solving and collaborative learning. I don't just directly tell students how to solve a problem. Instead, I work to craft experiences where students explore their own thinking by trying new ideas and showing their work in multiple ways. Through experimenting with different strategies and learning from each other, we arrive at a deeper understanding of the math and robotics concepts we are learning. My students are constantly debating solutions, analyzing their mistakes, and making sense of complex real world questions.
All these components of my classroom happen in both math and robotics. But, in robotics we have the added opportunity of competing with teams from all around the world in the FIRST LEGO League Competition.
