The materials and supplies that I am requesting for my students will help to create a project-based Art History class. In addition to learning about the history of art, students have a expressed a desire to improve their drawing skills. We would like to have different kinds of charcoal, erasers, sketchbooks, and drawing paper to make self-portraits. For our biggest project, students will make baseline self-portraits, and then learn about Betty Edward's idea of "drawing on the right side of the brain" to engage right-brain style thinking in order to draw more realistically. Students will enhance their ability to observe their surroundings in terms of shadow, shape, and light in order to engage with the world in a more critical way and eventually imagine the world they would like to exist--and make it happen.
