Research shows that furniture in the classroom facilitates learning while allowing the appropriate level of participation without distractions. Sometimes, classrooms create an intimidating environment with desks in rows, listless rules, and bland walls. That environment is uninviting, and in a subject as difficult as math, it may discourage students to try as hard or participate. This will especially be the case as students return to the classroom post-COVID-19 after not being in school for almost two years. Many of them will be intimidated, anxious and nervous coming from virtual learning.
This project will allow my classroom to transform into a welcoming yet productive environment for every student, no matter their background in math. Each piece of furniture will be used for a special design learning center, even including one for students with disciplinary/behavioral struggles. I look forward to seeing how my students interact with math in this new environment!
