Ukuleles offer great accessibility to learning music and offer a cultural representation of traditional Hawaiian and American popular music. Students in my school are often migrant, have missed prolonged periods of their education, are English language learners, or have various social or emotional obstacles they are overcoming.
Providing students with the knowledge and skill of playing these instruments and how music works, they discover of their own personal musicianship and use music to express their lived experience.
Music offers students another pathway to process and express their lives, alternative to violence or substance abuse. Beyond catharsis, music provides students with artistic disposition and career opportunities.
