My class needs a set of Scholastic Readers, "The New York Times Upfront." These readers will allow my students to experience a print and digital current events periodical that is produced specifically for their age, interests and reading level. Students need to learn to be discerning consumers of news and to know how to critically evaluate news before they believe it or form an opinion based on the information. In today's media environment, this skill has taken on a critical urgency as our technology has out paced many people's ability to be savvy consumers of media. This could possibly be the first opportunity many of my students will have to read a print publication
