My students are learning about the Engineering Design Process through the planning, design, building, and testing of balsa wood bridges. An important component of this process introducing students to the skills needed in real-life applications.
By using computer-aided graphic design programs, students will develop engineering skills that will be useful as they explore STEM careers. The purchase of the Microsoft Surface Pro computer will allow the software to be utilized in the classroom. While we are fortunate to have Chromebooks for use in class, these do not allow for the more advanced software programs to be installed and used as part of the learning process.
I recently attended a professional development activity where the opportunity for students to attend state and national competitions in engineering was discussed. It would greatly benefit my students who have shown an interest in STEM to participate in these events. This would give them networking, public speaking, and teamwork experience. However, to prepare them for these competitions, they need access to software programs such as ModelSmart3D which requires a PC to run. The Microsoft Surface Pro computer will allow me to have this resource available for students to use in a lab-station setting.
