We only have one color copier in our entire building that is under lock and key. We are not allowed to make more than 30 copies and have to get permission to use the copier every time we use it. There are so many times that I need to print out notes or examples for my students that are better explained through color and need to be able to do it right on the spot. For example, graphing a system of equations and having a different color for each line that matches up with the equation in the same color. Linear programming and systems of inequalities where the solution is where all the different inequalities overlap.
It would truly help students who are absent to have a color copy of the notes so they can visually see why the solution works. When I'm teaching probability and stats I love to use playing cards but my ELL students don't know that a spade is black (negro) or that a diamond is red (rojo). Picking a red, blue, or yellow marble totally confuses ELL students but if I could have a picture of a yellow marble in color it would be so less frustrating for the students and actually help me know if they are missing the question due to the math or due to the English. I run into this type of situation all the time. Even though I can show them on my smart board in class I know that they need to be able to have a color copy to take home so that they study the English that goes along with the math.
