This year I was able to turn an empty classroom into a mindfulness room, which I am calling "The Relaxation Lab". Each class, K-6, comes once a week for a social emotional lesson incorporating mindfulness and yoga. Right now we are doing chair yoga because we don't have enough yoga mats for whole classes. We will also be holding an after school mindfulness club in this room for students who are able to stay after and are interested in expanding their mindfulness practice.
With the yoga mats on my wish list, students will be able to try a variety of yoga poses and have a soft place for circle activities and classroom discussions. The books on this list will help bring mindfulness and literacy together to reach younger students in classroom and small group lessons.
The students are excited to get on the yoga mats and ask when they come if this is the week we start using them. They look forward to exploring yoga and relaxing on a comfy mat.
