Students in the immersion program are in unique classroom environment where they change rooms daily. My classroom hosts two large classes of kindergarteners. Because of this, my students have to share their classroom space. Organization of materials and supplies becomes increasingly important. My classroom has tables that maximize cooperative learning, but the only efficient way to store folders, journals and writing tools is with seat sacks. Our current seat sacks are over ten years old and they are a sight! They are ripped, small, dirty (despite multiple washings), faded and the nameplates no longer hold names. New seat sacks would give students a safe, clean place to keep their materials and belongings safe and organized.
My kindergartners need a safe place to store materials and to feel like they have a spot that is 鈥渢heirs.鈥 Moving back and forth between rooms can be overwhelming for young students. I like to provide them as much comfort and consistency as possible. The seat sacks create a place that is their own.
I am also asking for lap desks so that students can use them during stations to complete tasks like writing and word work in a space that maximizes learning. I believe that we should give students flexibility in how they accomplish tasks. This would allow me to offer another alternative.
